The LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur (“LWL Museum of Art and Culture”) in Münster has been a pioneer for accessible art offerings in North Rhine-Westphalia for years. We were asked to develop and produce a museum guide based on our earlier reading audiobook “Das Goldene Zeitalter” (The Golden Age). An exciting challenge. Thematically, six selected exhibits of the museum were to be presented, which would not only introduce blind and visually impaired people, but all art lovers in a particularly
The time span of the motifs ranges from the 12th century with the Bockhorst Triumphal Cross, through the 16th century with the “Family Picture of Count Rietberg” by Herman tom Ring, the 19th century with the painting “Lady with Child” by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, to the 20th century with the paintings “Self-Portrait with White Pearl Necklace” by Paula Modersohn-Becker, “Sitting Gypsy Girl” by Otto Mueller and the object “KitchenChef” by Joseph Beuys. In order to make the motifs even more sensually perceptible, we have further developed the tactile elements in comparison to our pilot project “The Golden Age”. Instead of deep-drawing foils, the motifs were provided with transparent printed tactile structures.
These structures show the most important details of the image composition on the colored motif. They allow a very good access to the image content for blind people especially in combination with the audio description. For two motifs, image sections were additionally enlarged and provided with tactile structures. The blind test readers were thrilled. The museum guide also offers visually impaired and non-disabled people a wide range of information about the collection of the Münster Museum. On top we produced 5 motifs as mobile tactile paintings, which, due to their low weight, dimensions of approx. 35 x 50 cm and an even more concise tactile elaboration, also enable blind people to participate in guided tours of the museum.
